I.
Steel Magnolias (written by: Robert Harling) takes place in a small town (Chinquapin, Louisiana) beauty shop owned by Truvy Jones. At the beginning of Act I, Scene I (Page seven), before any dialogue starts, it states “The curtain rises on Truvy’s Beauty Shop” in the stage directions. Truvy says “… meet the former First Lady of Chinquapin…” In Act I ,Scene I, Page nine. In Act II, Scene II, Page sixty-eight Clairee says “… Most of Chinquapin Parish’d give their eyeteeth…”. During the entire play the stage directions constantly have statements about hair products and beauty supplies, also the characters say things like ” She just thinks I’m getting a Trim” (Shelby, Act II, Scene I, page forty-six) which leads the reader to believe the play takes place in a beauty shop the entire time. The author, Robert Harling, chose the beauty shop as the place of the play because it is where the women that inspired this story would go to connect with each other, and that is exactly what they do in the play. All of the characters in Steel Magnolias treat the Beauty shop as a gathering place and somewhere to bond and share with the friends they have stayed with their entire lives, on page 64 it even states that Truvy only opened her shop on that day just in case M’Lynn decided she needed somebody to talk to.
II.
The play takes place during the eighties, during several different seasons. At the beginning of the play the season late summer/early fall, it is never said exactly when it is but later in the act the stage directions state that it is later in the year near Christmas ( very beginning of Act I, Scene II, [page thirty-one]). During Act I, Scene II Shelby announces “Merry Christmas” (page thirty-five) Later In the play during Act II the stage directions state ” It is in June eighteen months later”. The Play takes place during business hours of the beauty shop (between 9-6), most of it takes place midday. In Act II, Scene II it is near Christmas once again. The author chose the time of the play in each scene because a major life event happened to Shelby. During Act I, Scene I Shelby was getting married, during Act I Scene II she became pregnant, during Act II, Scene I she had just had her baby, and during Act II, Scene II she had just passed away.
III.
Before the play started Shelby’s father, Drum, had been shooting at birds so they would stay away from the magnolia ree split between their and Ouiser’s yard. The gunshots also scare Ouiser’s dog and causes his fur to fall out. (this is stated in Act I, Scene I, pages twenty-seven and twenty eight. It is also stated that Clairee’s husband had recently passed away.and the had built the new park in his honor.(Mentioned in Act I, Scene I page 9.) As well as Clairee’s Husband, Ouiser’s husband had also passed away.(Act II,SceneII, page 69)
IV.
Act I, Scene I: During this scene, Annelle arrives in town, and gets a job at Truvy’s Beauty Shop. When she first starts her job she is introduced to the rest if the characters in the play(Clairee, Shelby, M’Lynn and Ouiser). In this scene it is also announced that Shelby is getting married, and the tension between Ouiser and Drum is first revealed.
Act I, Scene II: During this scene Shelby announces that she will be having a baby even though she has been strongly advised not to by doctors, because she is diabetic. Also Annelle’s new found faith is also announced, it is around Christmas and everybody is anticipating the Christmas festival.
Act II, Scene I: it is now over a year from the previous scene. It is discovered that Shelby has already had her baby, jack jr., and despite having him three months premature he has destroyed her kidneys. She and her mother had been hiding the fact that she was now on dialysis, and the ladies at the shop find out only days before M’Lynn undergoes surgery to donate a kidney to her daughter.
Act II, Scene II: It is almost Christmas again, Shelby has passed away. The kidney transplant failed, and after being in a coma for a month her parents decided that it was her time to pass and took her off of life support. Everybody is coping with her death, M’Lynn has an emotional outbreak but is reconciled by the love of her dearest friends. The play ends on a positive note.
The most important event is Shelby having a baby, even though she is strongly advised not to and later struggling with the aftermath. Shelby is the main character, with the problem at hand. M’Lynn is the character that encourages her not to have the baby but ultimately helps her daughter even though she goes against her advice. The rest if the characters just serve a role of giving emotional support to Shelby and her worried mother.
The climax of the play is when the group finds out Shelby was on dialysis and was in need of a kidney that would be donated by M’Lynn, her mother. It serves as the climax because until that point everything with Shelby’s pregnancy seemed to be fine, and afterward she had passed away from complications with the transplant and dialysis.
